If a World quest gives reputation, it will state it on the in-game tooltip.
World quests in each zone give reputation. Gear rewards are mirrored from one faction to another, while cosmetic rewards like toys and tabards differ from faction to faction. Unlike Legion, there are different reputations for each faction, along with 2 reputations that are neutral and shared among the factions. All factions at Honored provide a 320 cloak that helps you start gearing up at 120, If you do the all the story quests in a particular zone, you will be close to Honored with the related faction. War Campaign quests award more reputation. World Quests in Arathi Highlands and Darkshore provide an additional way to get 7th Legion and Honorbound reputation. Faction Assaults and reputation turn-in tokens from Seafarer's Dubloon are new ways to earn reputation in Patch 8.1. Many cosmetic appearances from reputations had their restrictions loosened to be account-wide for transmog. Reputations with equivalents on the opposite faction will only count once towards that faction. Progress towards achievements like 100 Exalted Reputations is now account-wide, meaning you won't lose out on swapping mains or earning exalted first with a different character. 
The reputation requirements to unlock the Heart of Azeroth item level increases are now account-wide. As you gain reputation with these factions, you can purchase gear, toys and battle pets. 
Reputations play an important role as Friendly is required to unlock World Quests ( Uniting Kul Tiras/ Uniting Zandalar) and Revered is required for Battle for Azeroth Pathfinder, Part One (via Azerothian Diplomat). Battle for Azeroth reputations heavily emphasizes story through lore and world quests.
